Four Ways To Improve Your Podcast/Netcast/Webcast - PodcastingTricks.com
Every once in a while I decide it’s time for a post on how to improve your podcast and new media production. Some of this information is recycled from earlier posts or restated in new ways. Other bits are more recent. In any event, I present to you four ways to improve ANY media effort.
1. Focus on the audience.
What can you do that will entertain, inform, interest or touch your audience in a lasting way?
Deliver the goods at all costs. Even if it means letting go of your own ego. Concentrate on the audience’s needs and not your own. Serve the audience before you serve yourself and you’ll win hearts and minds quickly.
2. Become a more interesting human.
Find and explore your own special corners of the human experience.
Read a book, go to a museum, catch a play, volunteer at a retirement home, work with the disabled, help out at the local school or library. Get out and meet people. Interact with them and find out what they know that can help you. The information you gather will help you be more interesting the next time you step up in front of a mic or a camera.
3. Change it up.
After 10, 30 or 50 episodes, have you introduced your audience to any new topics, characters, guests or features?
Don’t be utterly predictable. That’s boring.
Break down all the old molds once in a while and try new ones.
4. Embrace emotion.
Podcasters need to share their emotions. They need to care about their audience. If you’re looking for creative inspiration, start with your emotions. Give of yourself. Don’t just take. Offer the audience something that is real…that comes from you and your heart.
It’s easy to pretend to be a bad-ass, full of attitude and super cool vibes. It’s hard to actually say something that’s real and that matters. Embrace emotion and you’ll reach your audience. Strut and you’ll see them go.

Hi Scott:
I just had a chance to look through the last 20 or so posts and they’re really great. These tips are really helpful.
I’m not disagreeing with you about concentrating on the audience’s needs, but I’ve been thinking a lot about how to make something that I want to see, based on the things I find myself searching to learn about each day. I think that as long as there are enough people out there like me, then I will be helping myself as well as those folks.
All the best!
